A day trip to Charleston — and why it’s worth every mile

Some cities don’t just give you a backdrop — they tell the story with you. Charleston, South Carolina is one of those rare places. From the ornate ironwork of the John Rutledge House Inn to the candy-colored facades of Rainbow Row, this city has a way of making love feel historic.
When this couple asked me to fly down to Charleston for a single-day engagement session, I said yes before I even finished reading the email. Shooting in Charleston has become one of my favorite back drops— the light, the architecture, the gardens heavy with magnolias and Spanish moss. A day trip wasn’t long enough, I could wonder these streets for days.
Stop 01 · The John Rutledge House Inn
Where the story begins
There is no better place to start a Charleston engagement session than the steps of the John Rutledge House Inn on Broad Street. Built in 1763 and recognized as a National Historic Landmark, this iconic antebellum home is everything Charleston promises — cream-painted stucco, elaborate black ironwork, sweeping staircases framed by blooming daffodils and tulips in early spring. It is simply extraordinary. From here you can walk to some stunning photo spots.
Stop 02 · The Gardens & Green Spaces
Light through the magnolias
From the Rutledge House, we made our way into Charleston’s legendary garden corridors — those tucked-away park paths and magnolia-lined walkways that feel more like a secret than a public space. The benches, the cobblestone paths, the garden beds bursting with color — every turn offers something new to work with.
The architecture as your backdrop
One of the things that makes downtown Charleston so extraordinary for engagement photography is that you don’t have to travel far between locations — the entire lower peninsula is essentially one beautiful backdrop after another. Between our garden session and our final destination at the Battery, we spent time on some of Charleston’s most iconic streets.
The large-scale white neoclassical buildings along Meeting Street offer something you simply can’t find in most cities — a canvas that is both grand and completely neutral, letting the couple become the only point of color in the frame. The shot of the two of them kissing under the palmetto tree, small against that enormous white facade, is one of the most Charleston images I’ve ever made.
We also shot along East Bay Street near the iconic teal ironwork of one of Charleston’s grand antebellum mansions — the ornate green-painted railings and columns create one of the most distinctly Charleston backdrops in the city. The black-and-white checkerboard sidewalk tiles in front add a graphic, editorial quality that I absolutely love.
As the light went down, we made our way toward the Battery — and the light was extraordinary. The streets near the waterfront have this beautiful quality: wide, airy, open to the sky, with the warm tones of the historic brick buildings behind and palm trees swaying above. It’s the quintessential Charleston street portrait.
Is a Charleston day trip worth it?
Without a single doubt. If you’re a couple dreaming of engagement photos that feel cinematic, rooted in real history, and alive with the kind of charm that simply cannot be manufactured — Charleston will give you all of that and more, in the span of a single morning.
